Although the government has confirmed there is no current shortage, the measures could be activated in the event of a major supply disruption.

These include diesel rationing, a 50mph speed limit on roads and priority access to fuel for emergency services and public transport.

The emergency measures are part of the National Emergency Plan for Fuel, first published in 2011 and most recently updated in 2024.
