Clayton Kershaw vs. Chris Sale. Doesn’t get much better than that, right? Maybe on paper, but neither pitcher recorded an out after the fourth inning at Fenway Park in Game 1 of the World Series Tuesday. They combined to allow eight earned runs over eight innings in a game the Red Sox won 8-4.

Relievers have recorded more outs than starters during these playoffs, and that trend continued Tuesday. A short outing from Sale could have been problematic for the Red Sox, but their bullpen stepped up, allowing just one run over five innings of work.

Craig Kimbrel’s performance must have been particularly reassuring for the Red Sox considering the command issues he battled earlier in October. He retired all three batters he faced, touching 99 m.p.h. while throwing 10 of 13 pitches for strikes.
