Democrats big hope for midterms: governors

As is always the case with midterm elections, almost all of the attention is on races for the House and Senate. Especially this year, as President Trump’s dismal polling numbers, the war in Iran, higher gas prices and just plain math give Democrats a great chance at taking back the House and a good shot at winning back the Senate.

But, as critical as they are, House and Senate races are not the only game in town. There’s one other area where Democrats have an excellent chance of scoring big in the midterms: governor’s races.

Governors have never received the attention they deserve, but today they’re more important than ever. With the Congress and the Supreme Court serving as nothing more than rubber stamps for Trump, governors are the only guard rails we have left. And they are working together on many fronts to protect our democracy.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and California Gov. Gavin Newsom all blocked Trump from sending federal troops into cities. A coalition of states, including California and New Jersey, successfully sued Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship. California and 18 other states also successfully challenged Trump’s orders to impose federal restrictions on state-run elections. And 20 states and the District of Columbia blocked Trump’s attempt to withhold federal funds, already approved by Congress, from states that refused to follow his orders. Without governors holding the line, we’d be a lot closer to an autocracy than we already are.
