Woman who had led 'remarkably content life' found dead amid no-fault eviction stress

Mary White, 73, had become increasingly fearful of becoming homeless after being told she would have to leave the Downham Market home she had shared with her husband.

Her body was discovered more than a month after she went missing, more than 10 miles away, at a dock in King's Lynn.

An inquest into her death, held this week at Norfolk Coroner's Court, was told she had lived a "remarkably content" life but had become increasingly anxious about her and her husband's eviction in the weeks before she disappeared.

She and husband Robin had lived at the property on Downham's Nelson Avenue for 11 and a half years.

The couple had been married for 53 years and had two daughters, Catherine and Lucy, who described their mother, a former shoe worker, as a devoted wife and loving parent.

“We were very close and had a very good relationship,” said daughter Catherine Bright.

She told the court that in the days before her disappearance her mother had become confused and erratic with her text messaging.

After reporting issues of mould at their home, the couple had been served with a no-fault eviction notice, which allows landlords to take back a property without needing to prove misconduct or rent arrears.
