This weekend, Zohran Mamdani is set to undergo the key rite of passage faced by every big-city mayor in their tenure: their first major snowstorm. With only a few weeks on the job under his belt, Mamdani has begun to detail his administration’s plans for the rapidly changing weather, appearing keenly aware that his handling of the challenge could come to define his time in City Hall for better or worse. From wall-to-wall media appearances to bearing bad news on the chance of a schoolwide snow day, here’s how the mayor is tackling the pending storm.

In years past, mayors have caught flak for appearing unprepared for inclement weather with Michael Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio alike fielding criticism for their administrations’ snow-removal efforts.

Mamdani laid out the city’s plans for the incoming storm on Thursday at an unrelated press conference, relaying to reporters the breadth of the response planned for local agencies (while making it clear that the final forecast was still undetermined).
