SNOBELEN: Education system should consider needs of parents

I hope the Ontario government doesn’t let a perfectly good crisis go to waste. If there was ever a time for profound change in public education, it’s now.

Think all the way back to last March. The COVID-19 pandemic was making its global tour and the image of overwhelmed hospitals and refrigerated trailers serving as temporary morgues drove a country wide lockdown.

The lockdown tested the agility, perseverance, creativity and tenacity of every sector. Public education failed miserably.

When schools were locked down most private schools responded quickly with online classes that provided students with a continuous stream of relevant course work and daily access to teachers.

Public schools responded slowly, reluctantly providing limited online materials and even more restricted access to teachers. The obvious problem of completing the school year was magically solved by simply pretending that a third of the school........
