OP-ED: Concern growing over the future of New Waterford healthcare redevelopment

A letter to Premier Houston

Over the past couple of days, questions were raised in the Nova Scotia Legislature about what is not happening with the proposed New Waterford Community Health Centre that will replace the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.

The concern in our community is growing. I expect it will be met with superficial and distracting comments from government about how healthcare is changing and the needs of the community will have to be assessed again.

Extensive, thorough consultation has already been done. Further delay is disappointing. It is not acceptable! In fact, it is disrespectful to the people of New Waterford and surrounding areas and many others from across the CBRM that use the old New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.

Since no public updates were obvious over the past year or so, I decided to try and contact someone at the top.

I shared my concerns in a copy of a letter first sent to Premier Tim Houston via email on August 13, 2026. Then as a courtesy, I shared it the next day with the Deputy Minister of Health, as well as the CEO for Nova Scotia Health.

I received an automated response from the Premier’s office confirming receipt of the letter and nothing else. Not even a grunt.

This August letter (below) to the premier will hopefully provide context around my concern.

Neither of us needs a lesson on the history of the overall redevelopment project at this stage. This inquiry is about its future,........
