New Delhi: Parliament on Friday gave its final approval to the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025, with the Rajya Sabha clearing the legislation hours after it was passed by the Lok Sabha. The bill seeks to replace the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and promises 125 days of guaranteed wage employment annually in rural areas. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan asserting that it was needed to fix shortcomings in the old scheme.

The Rajya Sabha cleared the Bill through a voice vote, hours after its passage in the Lok Sabha, amid loud protests, slogan-shouting and walkouts by opposition parties.
