My brother was the happiest he had ever been, days later he took his own life

It’s natural for all of us to look for any sign that a loved one might be improving if they are going through a particularly difficult period with their mental health.

For me, hearing my brother Josh tell us all that he was ‘the happiest he’d ever been’ brought a momentary sense of relief during an incredibly difficult period of worry.

Unfortunately, what appeared to be a sign of recovery turned out to be a warning of his intention to take his own life. Throughout the duration in which he was conveying his happiness to all of us, he was simultaneously searching the internet for ways to take his own life, something that users on online forums and social media were all too happy to help him with, providing methods, pain scores and encouragement to do so.
