Beyond cancer numbers

Nearly 69,000 people in Jammu and Kashmir have been diagnosed with cancer over the last five years, and the annual count has climbed steadily, from 13,060 cases in 2021 to 14,493 in 2025, figures tabled in Parliament this week have revealed. That is an eleven percent rise in half a decade. 

To be fair, part of this increase is not entirely bad news. Better life expectancy, wider access to diagnostic tools and growing public awareness all mean more cancers are being caught that would once have gone unrecorded. Lifestyle changes, tobacco use, obesity, poor diets and........
