Bracondale is shut to outbound traffic at the junction with King Street while Cadent gas teams carry out repairs.

The emergency closure came into force at 6am on Thursday and Norfolk County Council has said it will remain in place overnight and into Friday.

One lane is still open for those travelling into the city.

A signed diversion route is in place.

The closure is also affecting bus services, so passengers are urged to check before they travel.

According to the AA Traffic Map, there are long delays from King Street, along Carrow Road and Canary Way.

There is also a lot of congestion in both directions in Bracondale, St Stephens Road, Ipswich Road and Chapelfield Road.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “Emergency repair works have been taking place in Bracondale, Norwich, for a number of weeks as we deal with a series of complex issues affecting the gas mains which run under the road.

"While most of this work has been completed with lane closures, for safety reasons, it was necessary to close the road on Thursday morning to allow our engineers to complete this repair work.

“While we are confident that we are in the final stages of the repair, we need to stress that final readings will need to be carried out and re-opening will only happen if we are 100pc certain that it is safe to do so.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we deal with this incident.

"This is all about keeping everyone safe."
