'Quirky' church designed by descendant of Pocahontas named Norfolk's best

Christopher Winn spent years touring the nation to research for his book, Never Knew That About England’s Country Churches.

He has now shared his favourite church in every county.

In Norfolk, he favours St Michael the Archangel in Booton, near Reepham.

Mr Winn called the Victorian Gothic church "delightfully quirky" and noted that it was "designed by rector Whitwell Elwin, a descendant of Pocahontas".

"The interior is filled with beautiful angels holding up the roof and depicted in the stained-glass windows, all modelled on the rector’s female friends," he said.

"Outrageous and exuberant."

His favourite church in Suffolk is Holy Trinity in Long Melford, which dates back to the 15th century and features a stained-glass portrait of the Duchess of Norfolk.

He says the duchess inspired John Tenniel’s drawing of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.
