Demolition planned for Gateshead flyover that has 'been unsafe for decades'

The demolition of the Gateshead Flyover is set to be approved by politicians in the coming week. The proposal to dismantle the A167 Gateshead Highway will be presented to Gateshead Council's cabinet on Tuesday, three months after the route was abruptly closed. Chronicle Live readers are keen to know what will replace it.

The flyover, often referred to as an "eyesore", was closed to all traffic in mid-December due to fears that it was on the brink of collapse. A report released ahead of next week's meeting labels the 1960s-built structure as "inherently unsafe".

Although the council has tentatively allocated £18 million for the demolition works, the total cost and timeline for the project remain uncertain. The ongoing closure of the flyover has already led to calls for action from businesses on Gateshead High Street, who are concerned that a decrease in town........
