After the long international break and a stint at home following a hernia operation, Rafa Benitez finally returned to face the music in autumn 2017.

In his first press conference back after a window that left Benitez frustrated he said: "We think about what we have and what we can do – our commitment is to improve all players as individuals and improve the team."

The Magpies' promotion back to the Premier League had not resulted in Benitez getting the transfer kitty he felt he would be rewarded with from Mike Ashley.

Even after landing Jacob Murphy, Florian Lejeune, Joselu, Javier Manquillo and Mikel Merino, Benitez felt Newcastle were still one or two short of competing in the top-flight.

After finishing 10th that season, Benitez then hoped for more the next summer and ended up with Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez, Salomon Rondon (loan) and Yoshinori Muto.

But only after Benitez performed the type of display that can only be regarded as football media theatre as he made his feelings simple and clear in the bowels of Braga's stadium after a stifling........
