Have you heard Calgary’s new slogan? Blue Sky City is getting mixed reviews at best. There’s really nothing wrong with it, I guess, but it fails to highlight Calgary over any other city in any other country. Isn’t that the whole point? And get this, the slogan comes with a price tag of $5 million. I think I need to get into the slogan creation business if I can make that kind of money. Why don’t they just run a contest, at very little cost, and let a clever resident come up with something great. If I’ve learned nothing else in my 40 career in media, my readers, listeners and viewers always have the best ideas. Here at home, I’m not a fan of Winnipeg’s slogan, Made From What’s Real. But I actually like Manitoba’s slogan of Canada’s Heart Is Calling after it was tweaked a bit from Canada’s Heart Beats. I prefer smart-ass slogans the most, as they are both fun and memorable. I’d love to hear what you think in an email to Hal@HalAnderson.ca.

It’s Roderama weekend in Winnipeg! The annual car show is happening at Red River Exhibition Park at 3977 Portage Ave. It’s $10 to get in. Kids 14 years old and younger are free with an adult. Once again this year, the event by the Manitoba Street Rod Association is a fundraiser for the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation. And by the way, the MSRA’s 30th Annual Toy Drive is being planned for Sept. 15. Go to MSRA.ca for more information as that date gets closer.

A new survey says we tip a lot more than we really want to. On average, $453.60 too much every year. A majority, 56%, feel pressure to regularly tip higher. Younger people feel more pressure than older individuals. Less than a quarter, 23%, would likely leave a tip for a service that requires no human interaction at all.

UK engineers are experimenting with a new fan that might make airplanes a lot less noisy. The boundary layer ingesting ducted fan is being tested under the wings of planes. The University of Bristol says less noise pollution from aircraft has the potential to reduce heart failure and improve sleep quality.

As far as I’m concerned, if you can’t tell the story in two hours, don’t make the movie. A film that tops three hours is just ridiculous. According to a new survey, the perfect movie is 92 minutes long. I agree! Only 2% think a flick should last longer than two and a half hours.
