Somebody tell California taxing billionaires won't fix things
In California, where people usually flock to make their dreams come true, Democratic lawmakers are considering a bill that would punish the people who helped make the state an economic juggernaut.
It has been reported that tech billionaires like Google cofounder Larry Page and venture capitalist Peter Thiel are threatening to leave California after Rep. Ro Khanna, D-California, recently endorsed a proposed 5% wealth tax on California billionaires. (Ironic, because Khanna represents a significant portion of Silicon Valley.) It could be on the state's ballot this November. If passed, it could be paid out over five years, and a large portion would be earmarked for health care. Incredibly, Gov. Gavin Newsom actually opposes it.
If you're struggling to do the math, The New York Times reports that a 5% tax on Page's wealth would amount to $12 billion – and more than $1.2 billion for Thiel.
And you thought you paid a lot in taxes.
Even though it hasn't even passed yet, the potential tax has created a stir. For his part, © USA TODAY
