Churchill: Four-way fight is good for Shawn Morse

COHOES — As the Cohoes mayoral primary enters its final days — the election is three weeks from today, folks — I'll repeat a question I asked a few months ago.

Will one or two candidates at the back of the four-man pack drop out to keep Shawn Morse from winning?

In a city where the Democratic primary typically decides the election, the guess around town is that Morse has 25 to 35 percent of the vote — diehards who will stick with the incumbent even though he's been accused of domestic violence and faces a federal felony indictment alleging the misuse of campaign funds.

If that's the case, having four candidates in the race might allow Morse to win, even if the majority of Democrats in Cohoes want him gone. To put it another way: Morse loses if he's up against one or even two opponents, but wins as long as the field is crowded.

With apologies, a tasteless joke going around Cohoes: The mayor's base is so loyal he could beat up somebody on Remsen Street and still get 35 percent of the vote.

That, of course, is a play on candidate Donald Trump's 2016 claim about being able to shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue without losing voters. But while Trump has been accused of a lot of things, shooting........
