Kushner, Hamas chief in Egypt for talks on advancing Trump’s Gaza plan; IDF continues strikes
US President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner met Sunday with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi to discuss the US plan for Gaza, hours after Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya met with Cairo’s spymaster and even as Israel kept up strikes targeting terror groups in the Strip.
Kushner and Hayya, both in the Mediterranean coastal city of El-Alamein, held separate talks on the implementation of Trump’s postwar plan for Gaza, which has largely been stalled since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was declared last October.
Kushner also met with Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators, a diplomatic source told Reuters. Hamas officials were present at some of the meetings between mediators, Kushner and Nickolay Mladenov, Trump’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza, the diplomat said.
The meeting between Kushner and Sissi “emphasized the need for all parties to fulfill their obligations under the Gaza Strip ceasefire agreement,” according to presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy.
There was no immediate comment from Kushner.
Kushner was set to travel next to Israel, which has publicly rejected the 15-point roadmap, where he was set to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with Mladenov, on Monday.
The Hamas delegation, in a meeting with Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, “reaffirmed commitment to completing US President Donald Trump’s plan.”
Hamas had said in late July that it was ready to hand over its weapons to a nascent Palestinian technical committee set to govern Gaza, as part of the roadmap........
