Hormuz — the blockade that keeps on giving
The Iran war revealed Iran’s huge vulnerability — a blockade.
Because with Iran’s oil wells in danger of soon being severely damaged (because the blockade is preventing Iran from loading oil onto ships , which will soon force Iran to shut down their oil wells, which will severely damage the wells), there is now tremendous pressure on Iran to surrender.
In other words, the US is not strongly pressured by the blocking of Hormuz. Iran is.
When Iran closed the strait, Trump was furious. He threatened to bomb power plants and bridges. But then, suddenly, someone tweeted that the US should blockade Iran, just as they did to Venezuela. Trump shared the tweet, and then did the blockade.
So this strategy — to blockade Iran — seems to have developed as a result of Iran’s closing the strait.
Suddenly Iran’s move backfired. And now Iran is under extreme pressure.
The US can just wait, while Iran sweats. Iran has now offered to open Hormuz if the US removes the blockade, and to discuss the nuclear issue later. But reportedly Trump is not satisfied with this.
So instead of bombing Iran, the US is now enforcing a blockade, which can devastate Iran’s economy.
Isaiah prophesied, that in the end of days, nations will beat their swords into plowshares. (Isaiah 2; 4)
The simple meaning of this verse, is that the physical sword will be beaten down, and its iron will be fashioned into plows to extract food from the ground.
But perhaps another interpretation is, that instead of a battle with swords and guns and bombs, the fight will involve plowshares (and other instruments that extract produce (like food or oil) from the ground).
When Iran blocked the strait of Hormuz, it affected not just oil, but also the ability of farmers worldwide to receive fertilizers.
And the US blockade is threatening Iran’s ability to extract oil from the earth.
It’s a new kind of fight. Not bloodshed but economics.
As we watch Iran becoming weaker and more vulnerable, it inspires hope that soon this evil regime will no longer he able to endanger mankind.
And then, as Isaiah continues in the same verse, “no nation will lift a sword against another nation, and they will no longer study warfare.”
Because “the world will be filled with awareness of G-d, just as the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11; 9)
May it happen very soon.
