Two Dates, One Nation: Somaliland’s Birth (June 26) and Rebirth (May 18)

For the people of the Republic of Somaliland, national identity rests on two pivotal dates: June 26 and May 18. Each represents a different but complementary foundation of statehood. June 26 marks Somaliland’s original independence in 1960 and serves as the legal cornerstone of its sovereignty. May 18 marks the 1991 reassertion of that sovereignty after decades of failed union and conflict. Together, these dates form a unified national narrative that combines law, history, struggle, and collective will.

June 26: The Birth of a State

On June 26, 1960, the British Somaliland Protectorate achieved independence from the United Kingdom. For five brief but decisive days, Somaliland existed as a fully sovereign and internationally recognized state. During this period, it received diplomatic recognition from more than thirty countries, including major global powers, and was acknowledged by the United Nations.

On July 1, 1960, Somaliland voluntarily entered a union with the former Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic. That decision, made in the spirit of pan-Somali unity, would later prove deeply flawed.
