The tribute to the province’s longest serving premier will help ensure the legacy of one of Summerside’s most prominent sons will be preserved for future the generations. It has been almost half a century since he held office and, aside from a scholarship he helped establish at UPEI, there are no other lasting legacies to the man who spearheaded the Comprehensive Development Plan and the creation of the University of Prince Edward island and Holland College, just to name a few of his accomplishments.

By contrast, the region’s major airport in Halifax has been named after one of his contemporaries, Robert Stanfield, since 2019. He was a former Nova Scotia premier and federal Progressive Conservatives leader.
