Healing communities, not just patients
FOR decades, mental health has been understood primarily through the lens of illness: a problem that emerges within an individual and requires treatment after symptoms become severe. However, modern psychological science has gradually transformed this understanding. Mental health is not only about treating disorders, it is also about creating societies where individuals can maintain emotional well-being, access timely support and recover within supportive environments.
Around the world, many European countries have moved towards a community-based approach to mental healthcare. This approach recognizes an important reality that people do not experience psychological distress in isolation. Mental health is influenced by families, workplaces, educational institutions, social relationships, economic conditions and the communities in which individuals live. For Pakistan, where mental health challenges are increasing but professional services remain limited, the idea of community mental healthcare offers valuable lessons. The question is not........
