Oilers’ McDavid chases 170-point season at a pace unseen since the 1980s
Connor McDavid produced his third five-point game of the season last night and now has 31 points through 10 games. He broke Wayne Gretzky’s Oilers’ franchise record of 30 points in the first 10 games.
It has been an incredible start for McDavid and the Oilers, who are 8-1-1, sitting in first place in the Pacific Division and have the best points percentage in the NHL.
Leon Draisaitl has been the second most productive player in the NHL the past decade, and even he was at a loss for words on how to describe McDavid’s start to the season.
“What do you want me to say? It’s just not real,” he said. “He’s maybe the greatest player to ever play, in my books. It’s a pleasure to share the ice with him, a pleasure to learn from him every day. He deserves everything.”
Greatness should never be taken for granted, and what McDavid is doing now is remarkable. To be this dominant requires an immense commitment to training physically, mentally and emotionally. His ability to make plays at such a high speed is stunning, and fans, pundits and players across the NHL are, and should, be in awe of his abilities. As Draisaitl said, it doesn’t seem real.
It has been 30 years since an NHL player produced this many points in 10 games. McDavid is only the fifth player ever to score 31-plus points in 10 games, joining Kent Nilsson (first to do it), Wayne Gretzky (15 times), Mario Lemieux (seven) and Mike Bossy, who did it once. It is freakishly good, and the crazy part is if McDavid scores three points or more against Toronto tomorrow, he’d be at 32 or 33 points in a 10-game span, as this streak started with two points on opening night.
