NYC Mayor Mamdani needs to own his anti-Israel rhetoric fueling simmering antisemitism
The war of words between Mayor Mamdani and Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu over Gaza reached a fever pitch last week at the United Nations with Netanyahu, facing reelection, leveling sharp attacks against the mayor.
Some of Netanyahu’s fusillade was over the top. He accused Mamdani of being a Hamas supporter and of inciting riots against Jewish New Yorkers. Mamdani responded, predictably, by castigating the Israeli prime minister as an “architect of genocide” in Gaza.
But the heated language obscured a basic reality in New York. Jews in New York are fearful of growing antisemitism, including violence, in the city.
Fixing that is Mamdani’s job and, on that front, he is failing. He continually uses one of the the biggest megaphones in the country to talk of “genocide” and war crimes and crimes against humanity and the killing of children. Mamdani argues he is not antisemitic, but opposed to the policies of the Israeli government.
But it isn’t that simple. It is time for Mamdani........
