Somalis are more than the headlines
I’m not a big reunion goer. College 50th, High school 60th? I passed on both, sure I would know no one. As a student, I had been pretty isolated. If you don’t union, how do you reunion?
I do, however, make one exception. Formed during the first year of the Peace Corps‘ existence, the group known as Somali 1 has reconvened every five years. And I, like most others who are able, show up. Not so much like most reunion goers, to reminisce about the past, nor to boast of our accomplishments in the years since we disbanded, but to affirm the reality of our experience, since each blazing Somali headline about corruption in Minnesota or terrorist activity in Mogadishu makes it seem as if we dreamed up the whole thing.
