The killing of Ali Khamenei in a joint United States–Israeli air strike marks a dramatic escalation in the Middle East and the end of an era for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iranian state media confirmed early on Sunday that the 86-year-old supreme leader had been killed after strikes hit his compound on Saturday. The announcement followed a statement by United States President Donald Trump, who said Khamenei had been targeted using advanced intelligence and tracking systems.

Tehran described the killing as a “martyrdom” and blamed what it called a joint attack by America and Israel. Reports from Iranian outlets said members of Khamenei’s family were also killed, though independent verification remains limited.

Khamenei, who assumed leadership in 1989 after the death of Ruhollah Khomeini, presided over nearly four decades of profound transformation. While Khomeini led the 1979 revolution, it was Khamenei who consolidated Iran’s security state, expanded the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and built a network of regional alliances often referred to as the “axis of resistance”.

His rule was defined by deep mistrust of the West, shaped by the Iran–Iraq war of the 1980s and decades of sanctions. He promoted a “resistance economy” aimed at self-reliance, while backing proxy groups across the region to deter adversaries and extend Tehran’s influence.

Despite his hard-line reputation, Khamenei occasionally showed pragmatism. He authorised negotiations that led to the 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, viewing it as a limited arms-control arrangement rather than reconciliation with Washington. After the United States withdrew from the deal, Iran resumed uranium enrichment, heightening tensions with Israel and the West.

Domestically, his tenure was marked by recurring unrest. Mass protests in 2009, 2019, 2022 and again in late 2025 challenged the legitimacy of clerical rule, driven by economic hardship, political repression and social restrictions. Security forces responded with force, drawing international condemnation.

The strike comes amid a widening conflict following months of confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had long warned of military action against Iran’s nuclear programme, while Washington recently expanded its military presence in the region.

Khamenei’s death leaves Iran facing an uncertain succession process and raises fears of further escalation. Analysts warn that the removal of the country’s most powerful figure could trigger internal instability, regional retaliation, or a broader war, as Tehran’s allies weigh their response and global powers brace for the consequences.
