Guardians of Workers’ Welfare
The Code on Social Security, 2020 (“Code”) consolidates and rationalises various labour welfare laws in India to ensure comprehensive social security coverage for workers across organised and unorganised sectors. An important feature of the Code is the establishment of various Social Security Organisations, which are responsible for administering schemes, managing funds, and implementing welfare measures for employees, gig workers, platform workers and other beneficiaries.
How is the Board of Trustees of the Employees’ Provident Fund constituted?
The Central Government may constitute a Central Board by notification to administer the provident fund schemes under the Code.

It includes a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, up to five Central Government officials, up to fifteen State Government representatives, ten employer representatives, ten employee representatives and the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (ex officio).

Yes. The Central Government may constitute an Executive Committee and the Central Board may form committees and delegate powers to its Chairperson, Executive Committee, officers or State Boards.
What are the tenure and functions of the Central Board?
The tenure and service conditions are prescribed by the Central Government, and members continue until successors are appointed. The Board performs functions under the Code and other functions prescribed by the Central Government.
How is the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation constituted?
The Central Government may constitute the Corporation by notification for administering insurance benefits under the Code.
