It was certainly a case of the young meeting the old at one Norfolk care home when two birthdays were celebrated on the same day.

Wilmot Ching marked his 100th birthday at Aylsham Residential Manor House surrounded by his family.

And at the same time, he met his one-year-old great-grandson Franklin for the very first time as he was brought over from Denmark to Alysham to celebrate their big day.

Mr Ching described it as "very special" as he watched the youngster wander around the room and play with his 100th birthday badge, while their loved ones gathered around them both.

The day also held an extra sentiment for the family as it was celebrated at the care home which Mr Ching and his wife Valeria had founded together in 1981.

They bought the grade-II listed building in a dilapidated state, but room by room they brought it back to life.

The home quickly became a part of the family, with all five of their children - Denise Denis, Nickie Fisher, Christopher Ching, Nigel Ching, and Tom Ching - involved in different ways.

Mr Ching and his daughters recounted some of his favourite memories over the years, including travelling across Africa and India after the Second World War, and running a farm in Wales.

When he was asked what his secret was, he said his family had kept him young.

Mrs Fisher said: "He was a philanthropist and was always looking for ways to improve others lives."

Ms Denis added: "He was always ready to take on a challenge and never frightened to move on.

"He always made life fun for us."

After the first round of celebrations was held at the care home, the group moved to Marsham village hall where more family members were waiting to mark the special day.
