Village expansion fears over new homes plan on former chicken hatchery site

Dineshkumar Patel, of Martham Properties Ltd, has been granted planning permission for land at Martham East Broiler Farm, a former chicken hatchery off Acacia Avenue in the village.

The scheme will see two disused sheds and a bungalow demolished to make way for the houses.

The plans will also include the redevelopment of associated public open space, drainage and infrastructure.

Access to the new estate will be from the northwest corner of the site off Acacia Avenue.

Norfolk County Council Highways did not object to the plans.

There were five objections from members of the public, however, with some villagers flagging concerns about the access road, the overdevelopment of the village and the loss of agricultural land.

In 2016, Great Yarmouth Borough council granted outline permission for 55 houses on the site but they were never built.

At the time, the decision had led to fears the development could turn the village into a town.

The latest plans were approved at a borough council development management committee meeting on April 8.
