In 2011, something quietly historic happened in the corridors of the World Intellectual Property Organization. For the first time, China filed more patent applications than the United States. Western analysts shrugged. They called it a numbers game, insisting that quality still resided firmly in American hands. Fifteen years on, the numbers have grown so large that even the skeptics struggle to explain them away.

In 2024, Chinese inventors and companies filed 1.8 million patent applications, accounting for nearly half of every patent filed anywhere on earth that year, and more than three times the number submitted in the United States, which managed 501,831. To put that gulf in perspective: if you took every patent application filed by the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Germany combined, China would still be ahead. The World Intellectual Property Organization, which publishes these figures annually, noted that China has now filed more than one million applications every year since 2015 and is rapidly approaching the two million marks. The rest of the world is not catching up; it is falling further behind.

The story is not limited to applications. When it comes to patents actually granted, China issued over one million in 2024 compared to 319,815 in the United States. More revealing is the pace of change. China approved 124,000 additional patents in 2024 compared to the previous year. The United States approved just 4,570 more, a difference in momentum of twenty seven times. Since 2015, China has issued more patents annually than any other country on earth, a streak that shows no sign of breaking.

A decade ago, in 2014, China held a 34.6 percent share of global patent applications. By 2024, that figure had climbed to 49.1 percent, nearly half of all innovation activity on the planet concentrated in one country.
