Cyprus moves to auction fugitive Jho Low’s luxury villa linked to 1MDB scandal

Cypriot authorities are moving to auction a luxury seaside villa owned by fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Low, marking a significant development in international efforts to recover assets allegedly linked to one of the world’s largest financial scandals. The decision follows a confiscation order issued by a district court in Nicosia and represents the first instance in Cyprus where authorities have seized property without a prior conviction in a domestic court.

According to a statement released by Cyprus’ attorney general’s office on June 9, the confiscation application was jointly submitted with the country’s Unit for Combating Money Laundering. The villa, located in the picturesque Cape Greco area near the resort town of Ayia Napa, was purchased by Low in 2015 for approximately 5.9 million euros. The property later became a symbol of broader concerns surrounding Cyprus’ now-defunct “golden passport” program.

The legal action is notable not only because of the high-profile nature of the case but also because Low’s legal representatives reportedly consented to the confiscation proceedings. Cypriot authorities said the order was granted with the agreement of Low’s legal team, a factor that may have helped facilitate the unprecedented seizure process. Attempts by investigative journalists to obtain comments from attorneys previously associated with Low in Cyprus reportedly went unanswered before publication.

Low, whose full name is Low Taek Jho, has remained one of the world’s most sought-after financial fugitives. His current whereabouts remain unknown. International law enforcement agencies have been pursuing him for years following allegations that he orchestrated a vast fraud and money laundering operation involving Malaysia’s state investment fund, 1Malaysia........
