In his column of Aug. 14, Robert Steinbuch wrote critically of an earlier column written by Barbara Pryor and Gay White, who asked that Arkansas public television return "PBS NewsHour" to 6 p.m. from its move to 10 p.m., and put "Washington Week with The Atlantic" back on the air after it was replaced with other programming.

In his comments, Steinbuch writes, "The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)--self-described as 'a private corporation funded by the American people' (through the diversion of public funds!) ..."

Sloppy work for an attorney (and professor and journalist) of Mr. Steinbuch's caliber and reputation. The fact is that the CPB was an American nonprofit corporation created by Congress under the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 to promote and help support public broadcasting in the United States and whose mission was to ensure universal access to non-commercial, high-quality educational, cultural, and other content and telecommunications services (a mission in stark contrast to Mr. Steinbuch's claim of delight if Arkansas TV ran 10 hours a day split evenly between "The Odd Couple" and "Barney........
