Some will be elated, some will be left feeling empty and unfulfilled.

Now, the main event may not be the big ticket item for everyone. Different people get excited by different things. There may be some fumbling, but be careful not to suffer any wardrobe malfunctions and be aware of a potential backlash should there be any excessive screen time.

Yes, we are talking about the Super Bowl … of date nights: Valentine’s Day.

While catering to each others wants, needs and desires should be the central focus, there are no shortage of options to ways to spend your time — dinner and/or a movie, concerts, even comedy — before the action really kicks off.

A candlelight concert certainly could set the mood, which is why tickets were snapped up to the event featuring Romeo & Juliet and other love songs at the Manitoba Museum Wednesday.

An altogether different approach is happening at the Park Theatre, as Love You to Death, a Cinema Seance, returns for a second year. It’s “live music played to dead films” with local musicians adding their piece to classic films such as Creature of the Black Lagoon, Werewolf of London and King Kong.

Dinner and a movie is a classic combo, and the MET has it covered Wednesday with a buffet followed by the Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga take on A Star is Born. If another day/film works better, The Notebook plays Friday and 2008’s Mamma Mia on Saturday in its ongoing dinner and a movie series.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery also has a dinner and tour special available, and Ciao’s Dine About Winnipeg, a three-course fixed price lunch or dinner menu available at participating restaurants through Feb. 25, will see some offer special Valentine’s Day menus.

It’s been said laughter is the way to a woman’s heart, so let the pros help set the stage. Veteran standup comedian Dave Hempstead is hosting a couples-themed show Wednesday at Rumor’s, while the Rec Room’s comedy night features Benji Rothman, Emmanuel Lomuro, and Andy Noble.

If you can hold out until Feb. 15, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of Romeo and Juliet opens, and runs through Sunday.

Of course the commercialism and other aspects of Valentine’s Day is bound to rub some people the wrong way, figuratively speaking.

Winnipeg Psychedlic is back with its annual anti-Valentine show, Love Hurts, on Saturday at the Pyramid Cabaret. Fetish/kinky attire is encouraged for the DJ dance party that includes a robe suspension demonstration and live body painting.

And an Anti-Valentine’s Day Market is coming Saturday to Robert A. Steen Community Centre, with Wicked Bazaar hosting 40-plus local “wild, witchy and weird” vendors, artists and makers for the free event, from 3-9 p.m.

A few tickets remain for Chelsea Handler’s Little Big Bitch comedy tour, at the Burt on Friday night … Streetheart is at Club Regent the same evening, with Andre-Philippe Gagnon taking over Saturday night … Now based in Los Angeles, Winnipeg actor/comedian Aisha Alfa is back at the Park Theatre on Friday night with podcast co-host Jonathan Giles to host Truth or Dance, a comedy/dance evening featuring sets from Mike Green, Jordan Welwood, and Emmanuel Lumuro and tunes courtesy Tempo Collective … And, way out west this weekend there’s the Manitoba Tattoo Expo at the Assiniboine Downs from Friday to Sunday, and the Winnipeg RV Show & Sale, Feb. 10-20 at Red River Exhibition Place.
