It may have taken me a little longer to realize, and perhaps it has something to do with advancing age, but that really is just about the best gift to give and receive this time of year.

A toast to those businesses and services who are able and willing to provide staff and by extension their families with time to create happy holiday memories.

By no means would we suggest to not go out. It’s just something to keep in mind during a time of year that can be stressful and run counter to the intended result.

As far as holiday traditions go, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s take on The Nutcracker has been thrilling audiences since 1999 and continues at the Centennial Concert Hall through Dec. 30.

Making their debut with the RWB are the Asham Stompers, bringing the history and energy of the Red River Jig to the stage.

The Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble is a returning guest, joining over 100 dancers performing live with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to create one of the biggest spectacles of the season.

Other holiday shows to consider, if you can get your mitts on tickets, are The Sound of Music at Royal MTC through Dec. 23, the same timeline as Narnia at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, and improv comedy troupe Outside Joke’s A Christmas Carol: Bigger Dickens Energy at Prairie Theatre Exchange.

Zoo Lights continues at Assiniboine Park through Jan. 7, a day later than Canad Inns Winter Wonderland at Red River Exhibition Park.

Take it as a bit of a commentary on the commerciality of the season if you’d like, but the screening of the world’s best ads presented by the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, at Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajug through Jan. 6, is always worth a look.

A real cracker of a film highlights this week’s options at your local independent movie theatre, the Dave Barber Cinematheque in the Exchange District.

Widely acknowledged as a seminal film in the development of Australian cinema, Wake in Fright was considered lost until a negative surfaced in 2004. Called “the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence” by Nick Cave, the 1971 film directed by Canadian Ted Kotcheff and starring Donald Pleasance (Halloween) tells the story of a school teacher’s descent at the hands of drunked derelicts while stranded in a small Outback town.

Contemporary comparisons might be Deliverance, and Straw Dogs.

Wake in Fright screens Friday night at 7 p.m.

Also over the holiday break is Friday’s final screening of Eileen, the psychological thriller starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway. There’s also the holiday edition of the Saturday morning all-you-can-eat-cereal cartoon party, and two solid Trash Cult Tuesdays offerings in GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, and Once Upon A Time in Uganda.

Times Change(d) has a cracker of a lineup, with the Super Fun Christmas Family Dance Party on Saturday afternoon, the J.D. Edwards Band that night, Andrina Turenne and LOGS/the Perpetrators on Friday, and Ego Spank with guests Joey Landreth, Cara Luft, Jennifer Hanson and Todd Martin on Thursday.

Handsome Daughter has its Winter Formal on Saturday with Lowlife, Leon’s Getting Larger, and Witch Hazel, and the Good Will offers its Best of Bands as Bands on Friday night with local takes on Oasis (Jamboree), Bruno Mars (Roman Clarke) and Avril Lavigne (Fontine).
