You might be awaiting the arrival of the Messiah, as told by Handel, or have visions of the Sugar Plum Fairy, twinkling in the not-too-distant future.

Or you may not wish to be seen around red and green and settle in for some Bourbon and Blues instead, or bust out the apres-ski apparel and hop around energized with the ski bunnies.

Either way, or in any combination of the two, to all a good night.

With the backdrop of the historic Knox United Church and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performing a beloved centuries-old oratorio, it isn’t overly surprising that the Handel’s Messiah shows on Friday and Saturday night are sellouts.

Another nostalgic treasure is just around the corner, though, in the usual home of the WSO. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Nutcracker opens Thursday at the Centennial Concert Hall, with performances through Dec. 30. Similarly, Candlelight: Holiday Special concerts at the Fort Garry Hotel featuring The Nutcracker run Wednesday through Saturday.

Rory Allen brings his Rockin’ Elvis Christmas show to Club Regent on Friday, where the Crash Test Dummies are Thursday night to perform songs from Jingle All the Way and other hits.

You may not hear any Christmas music, but the spirit is in the right place as Lost Country hosts a Christmas special at Times Change(d) on Dec. 21. They’ll be collecting non-perishable donations for Harvest Manitoba and 75% of ticket sales go directly to Main Street Project.

Trumpets herald the arrival of the holiday season at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church in Osborne Village on Sunday, with afternoon and evening shows of Let the Trumpets Sound. The Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir is joined by the Winnipeg Brass Quintet and other guests.

Music, dance and other Ukrainian traditions are featured Saturday at the Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre as Keeping the Spirit: A Ukrainian Christmas Celebration takes centre stage. Performances are wrapped around a heartfelt story of a Ukrainian family embarking on a new life in Canada as the holiday season approaches.

And the Manitoba Craft Council teams up with IKEA to host a Vinterfest market all weekend long, with free admission to peruse makings from 40 MCC members.

Musical improvers Outside Joke come at tradition a little differently with A Christmas Carol: Bigger Dickens Energy at Prairie Theatre Exchange through Dec. 23.

Same goes for the Secret Santa Drag Show at Club 200 on Sunday, with each performer assigned a song in secret to interpret.

Downtown brewer Devil May Care takes another swing at its fifth-anniversary celebration of flagship beer Starstuff, and breaks its own rules by offering flights from 12 beers of Christmas on Saturday during Flightmare Before Christmas 2: Fly Harder.

Ski outfits are highly encouraged for Monster Energy Presents: SkiiTour on Saturday at the Park Theatre, with the titular DJs joined by Devon Dare, DJ Beatz, and Groove Belle.

Big Wreck is joined by Texas King and Danny Greaves (The Watchmen) at Club Regent on Sunday, and the Good Will Social Club has Mahogany Frog with Bush Lotus and Sweeping as openers on Friday.
