It seems to be about the point in the entertainment calendar when almost everything points to Christmas, which might offer a nice distraction from it starting to get dark mid-afternoon and it still being dark when many of us are getting up to ‘face the day.’

Some may turn to alcohol in search of their Christmas jollies, which makes the Santacon 2023 pub crawl — in support of the Christmas Cheer Board, no less – a responsible option.

The money you save on rideshares or cabs may have to be funnelled into a Santa Claus costume, or some reasonable seasonal facsimile, but those who take part tend to be back out on their merry way 12 months later anyhow.

More details are available through Santacon Winnipeg’s Facebook or Instagram, but the nuts and bolts are that your ‘ticket’ for Saturday’s shenanigans is a $10 donation to the Cheer Board, payable to Papa Santa on scene, with some Santas collecting donations at various bars, lounges and the like reasonably reached on foot in and around the downtown area.

Some other options to search for your own Christmas cheer:

Serena Ryder performs selections from her 2018 album Christmas Kisses and some new stocking stuffer tunes while unpacking the roots of the holiday season when her Merry Myths tour pulls into Club Regent on Friday night.

Holiday tradition has the JP Hoe Hoe Hoe Holiday Show at the Burton Cummings Theatre on Friday sold out, so consider the late night after party at the Park Theatre starting around 11 p.m., and/or the third annual (Don) Amero Little Christmas show on Saturday at the Burt. (The Small Glories’ Songs for a Winter Night at the West End Cultural Centre on Friday has also filled up. Y’all are just bursting with holiday cheer.)

While I pledge my Christmas holiday movie allegiance to Badder Santa, it’s not exactly family friendly. Instead, there are three swings at Elf this weekend.

The Centennial Concert Hall has two chances – Friday night and Saturday afternoon — to take in the Will Ferrell-Zooey Deschanel vehicle on a 40-foot screen with the live score performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra lead by noted conductor Ron Spiegelman.

Elf also plays Sunday at the MET’s Holiday Dinner & a Movie, with It’s A Wonderful Life this Saturday. (White Christmas is on the menu on Dec. 14 and a week later it’s A Christmas Story.)

Rage Against the Machine cancelled its 2023 tour that included Winnipeg after singer Zach de la Rocha tore his Achilles tendon. That show was rescheduled a few times after it was initially postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions in 2020. A piece of the agit-pop band’s history has made it to the city nonetheless.

A 1985 Chevy Astro van used for touring in the early ‘90s was recently wheeled into the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and is the centrepiece of new exhibition Beyond the Beat: Rage Against the Machine, which opened Friday.

On loan from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the van belonging to guitarist Tom Morello serves as a vehicle for a deeper dive into the way music has spurred social movements across decades. Beyond the Beat: Music of Resistance and Change opens in February.

Cirque du Soleil: Corteo is at Canada Life Centre through Jan. 10 … Joe Gatto’s Night of Comedy has two shows on Sunday at Club Regent. Rumor’s has Paul Myrehaug this weekend, while Charles Haycock is at Yuk Yuk’s … Lagwagon’s Sunday show at the Park Theatre is sold out, but at last look there are still some tickets left for Monday … Indie rockers Living Hour are at the Good Will Social Club on Saturday … Attica Riots release EP Life is a Sugar Pill at the Park Theatre on Saturday.
