Often overlooked when it comes time to hand out the hardware, the fan-nominated event actually gets heavy, with categories across the spectrum of rock, metal, punk, and hardcore for musicians and industry professionals.

“From alternative vocal techniques, to guitar riffs, to heavy drums, and fast-paced bass lines, loud music is challenging to write and perform,” Violet Vopni, MLMA’s front-of-house Manager, explained, noting the idea is to leave attendees with a “sense of pride, validation, and joy for loving loud music, and enjoying some amazing local talent.”

The School of Rock House Band opens the night followed by sets from Book of Ghosts, Ash and the Arsonists, and Northern Royals. Closing out the night are alternative rockers Econoline Crush, fronted by Trevor Hurst from tiny Cromer, Man., who grew up in Virden and came to Winnipeg before finding his way to Vancouver and success in the mid/late ’90s.

Hurst is the last original member after the death of guitarist David ‘Ziggy’ Sigmund in March 2022, just before wrapping up comeback album When the Devil Drives. A final track — Locked in Your Stone — was then crafted as an outlet for Hurst to work through his grief of losing a close friend to “addiction and self-loathing”, and, despite his training as a registered psychiatric nurse, being unable to reach him.

“It served as an outlet, a way to express my sadness and my frustration,” Hurst said in a news release. “Recording it after his death allowed me to unload some of my emotional baggage and move forward.”

The MLMA appearance wraps up a Canadian tour for Econoline Crush, with Hurst presumably heading back to work at Canupawakpa Dakota Nation in southwestern Manitoba. A documentary on Hurst’s second career called Flatlander is scheduled for a 2024 release.
