While it promises plenty of in-tents musical performances (along with generous helpings of French-Canadian culture et al), Festival du Voyageur isn’t the only big (top) show this weekend.

A look at some of the other goings-on this wintry weekend:

Original bassist Rex Brown along with vocalist Phil Anselmo, who turned the tide for Pantera in the early ’90s, picked up respected guitarist Zakk Wilde (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society) and drummer Charlie Benante (Anthrax/S.O.D.) for a reunion tour that’ll blast away from Canada Life Centre on Friday night.

At one time the biggest metal band in the land, Pantera disbanded after guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot to death by a fan during a 2004 concert. His brother Vinnie Paul, the group’s drummer, died from heart disease in 2018.

Lamb of God and Child Bite are also on the bill.

Before extending his Champagne and Roses tour into Europe, smooth R&B crooner Ne-Yo stops in Winnipeg for a one-off show Saturday night at the Convention Centre.

The three-time Grammy award winner broke into a business as a songwriter and has done a number of featured collaborations. Also an actor, dancer, producer and The Masked Singer winner (as a cow), Ne-Yo is being brought to town by Pinoy Tribe Entertainment.

As far as birthday parties go, Sunday’s shindig at the Burt for the ‘the King of the North’ is shaping up to be a doozy.

Originally from Cross Lake (now Pimicikamak Cree Nation), country-rocker Ernest Monias has been performing for about half a century and hits the three-quarters-of-a-century mark on Sunday. The show includes an honouring ceremony with a star-blanket presentation, with performances from Monias, the C-Weed Band, guests Billy Joe Green and Murray Porter, and Monias’s son Delaney with his band Blue Highway.

The second annual Dallas Good Memorial Hootenanny goes off Friday night at Times Change(d), with Leaf Rapids and the D. Rangers paying tribute to the late Sadies great, who died suddenly Feb. 17, 2022.

With the unfortunate demise of the Good Will Social Club, the decades dance parties hosted by DJs Co-op and Hunnicutt, and Lambo have found a new home at the Park Theatre. A Nothing Butt ’90s video dance party gets things started Friday, with future Totally Tens and Only ’00s to follow.

And Casper TNG’s Ghost Town tour stops at the Exchange Event Centre on Saturday night for an all ages show.

Funny business isn’t taking a backseat this weekend. Veteran comedian Ron James brings it at Club Regent on Friday night, with the Snowed In Comedy Tour at the Gas Station Arts Centre on Saturday and the Winnipeg Comedy Showcase at the Park Theatre on Sunday.

The independent Snowed In tour is now in its 15th year, with this Winnipeg stop featuring founder Dan Quinn with Paul Myrehaug, Pete Zedlacher, and Erica Sigurdson.

Jared Story’s Winnipeg Comedy Showcase is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Sunday with its 35th show, featuring Matt Nightingale, Benji Rothman, Tyler Penner, Emmanuel Lomuro, Kristen Einarson, and Alec Vandersteen this time around.

And on other stages, options include The Mountaintop, a reimagining of the night before the assassination of Martin Luther King on the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre main stage through March 9, Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s interpretation of Romeo & Juliet at the Centennial Concert Hall through Sunday, and The Problem with Pink at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People through Feb. 24.
