Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) recently made a mistake .

The Republican vetoed a bill to ban "gender-affirming care" in the state and prevent boys who identify as girls from playing on girls school sports teams.

"These tough, tough decisions should not be made by the government. They should not be made by the state of Ohio," DeWine told reporters. "They should be made by the people who love these kids the most, and that's the parents."

"Parents are making decisions about the most precious thing in their life: their child," DeWine added. "These are gut-wrenching decisions that should be made by parents and should be informed by teams of doctors who are advising them."

DeWine never addressed the sports matter to reporters, telling them the other aspect of the bill is a far bigger issue. He is right that sports are a smaller matter, but when boys excel in girls sports throughout the country, it is a problem.

DeWine drew heat from conservatives , and his minimization of the transgender sports topic is similar to that of Gov. Spencer Cox (R-UT), who vetoed a transgender sports ban in 2022.

"Four kids and only one of them playing girls sports. That's what all of this is about," the Republican governor said in a statement . "Four kids who aren't dominating or winning trophies or taking scholarships. Four kids who are just trying to find some friends and feel like they are a part of something. Four kids trying to get through each day. Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few."

In Ohio, the Republican-controlled state legislature should try to override the governor's veto. Red states, including Ohio, must reject "woke" gender ideology rather than try to reason with irrationality. Men are men, boys are boys, women are women, and girls are girls. Pumping minors full of hormones and having them undergo cosmetic surgeries will never change that reality. The state should acknowledge this fact.

Girls usually start puberty between 8 and 13 years old, while it starts between 9 and 14 for boys. The state should protect children young enough to believe in Santa Claus from making life-altering decisions such as taking puberty blockers , especially since many children outgrow their gender dysphoria. Parental rights matter. However, the state cannot allow parents to do whatever they want, and it has a vested interest in preventing various forms of harm to children.

DeWine is right to express concern for children with gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia. However, since environmental factors contribute to both, the state should never promote or attempt to normalize either condition. States such as Ohio should expand and promote alternative treatments for those struggling with mental health problems, including gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia.

Since gender dysphoria can cause depression and anxiety, states should curtail problems that worsen youth mental health, such as underage substance use, gambling, excessive social media use, and the broken foster care system. They should also prevent schools from promoting ideas that make children confused about their gender and awkward or uncomfortable about their bodies.

Children need to know it is OK to be the gender they are and that they need not pretend to be the other gender to find happiness. The last thing they need is their state's Republican governor perpetuating "woke" gender ideology and telling them the opposite.
