SNOBELEN: Parallels of genius and human frailty are crystal clear

Many years ago my friend Tracy Goss gave me a unique gift, a crystal sphere with a small, intentional flaw in the base.

The crystal represents the fundamental truth that to be human is to be flawed. It sat prominently on a variety of desks as I journeyed through assorted adventures.

The contrast between perfection and flaw is the root of an eternal paradox; no matter how brilliant the crystal, attention is always drawn to the imperfection.

That crystal was a daily reminder of some basic truths, the first of which is that no matter how we wish it not to be so, our flaws are obvious to anyone who knows us well. The strategies people employ to hide, disguise, explain away or diminish their personal flaws ultimately do no good.

Disguising imperfection is a waste of time and effort.
