Timothee Chalamet, Seth Rogen big Jewish winners at Golden Globes
Dark comedy “One Battle After Another” and “Hamnet,” a story about William Shakespeare’s grief over the death of his son, claimed the top prizes on Sunday at the Golden Globes, one of the first major ceremonies in Hollywood’s annual awards season.
“One Battle” was named best movie musical or comedy, one of its four Globe honors, and “Hamnet” earned the best movie drama prize.
Overall, the celebrities in attendance largely steered clear of political topics, there were a handful of Jewish moments sprinkled throughout the star-studded event.
Timothee Chalamet, who is Jewish, triumphed in one of the most competitive categories, taking the trophy for best male actor in a movie musical or comedy for his role as a professional table tennis player in “Marty Supreme.”
The film features Chalamet playing Marty Mauser, a Jewish kid working at a shoe store who aspires to be the best table tennis pro in the world. The character is loosely based on a real-life player, Marty Reisman, but the movie is just as much a reflection of Chalamet and writer-director Josh Safdie’s own whatever-it-takes ambitions.
