Life Will Shake the Cup. What Will Spill Out?
What You Put In Is What You Take Out
On Rosh Hashanah, we dip an apple in honey and ask G-d for a good and sweet year.
We pray for sweetness around us—health, nachas, livelihood, peace and good news.
But perhaps Rosh Hashanah also asks us to create sweetness within us.
Because we cannot always control what happens around us. But we can work on what we put inside.
A man was once walking down a hallway carrying a full cup of coffee. Someone rushed around the corner, bumped into him, and coffee went flying everywhere.
A wise man asked him, “Why did you spill the coffee?”
“Because someone bumped into me!”
“No,” came the reply. “You spilled coffee because coffee was in your cup. If there had been water inside, water would have spilled out.
Whatever is inside the cup is what comes out when the cup gets shaken.”
And so it is with us.
Life bumps into everybody.
Traffic. A canceled flight. A computer that freezes. An insulting remark. A disappointment. Sometimes something far more........
