Elwood Watson: Republicans wage a senseless war against Anthony Fauci

The Republican war against Anthony Fauci came to a head earlier this month when GOP senators slapped the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases with contempt of Congress charges.

The eight-to-five intensely partisan vote by the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee was in response to Fauci repeatedly invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to avoid Republicans’ questions relating to diary entries publicly released by the committee. The documents exposed the fact Fauci gave the lab-leak hypothesis for the origin of the coronavirus more credit privately than he did in public during the inaugural stages of the pandemic.

The proposed measure would have to be ratified by 60 members of the senate chamber, making it unlikely the intensely partisan measure would garner the approval of enough Democrats to proceed to official ratification. Rather than send the proposal to the floor after the committee vote, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a fierce critic of Fauci, has made it clear he intends to send it directly to the Department of Justice.
