Small Business Saturday may be over, but the love for our local shops should keep shining all year long!

Right here in Saratoga County, we’ve got amazing local shops, cafes and service providers, and they need our support more than ever, all year round. Choosing to shop within our communities allows New Yorkers to reinvest revenue and tax dollars, encouraging job creation and bolstering regional economic growth.

Our neighborhood’s small businesses aren’t just places to shop or grab a bite — they’re the heart and soul of our community. These hard-working entrepreneurs are our friends and neighbors, pouring their hearts into what they do. They embody the entrepreneurial spirit New York aims to reclaim, a spirit deep within our state’s rich history as a beacon of the American Dream.

In today’s world, our community’s small businesses face persistent challenges, exacerbated by recent economic uncertainties. Every time we buy local, we’re not just getting a great product; we’re investing in our own community. Our money stays right here, helping our local economy grow. It keeps our streets vibrant and our neighborhoods unique, standing out from the cookie-cutter sameness you might find elsewhere.

Keeping the Small Business Saturday spirit going strong is as easy as making small, everyday choices. Instead of heading to the big chain stores, check out what our local shops have to offer or head to a family-owned restaurant. Additionally, leaving a positive review, spreading the word about your favorite local spot or sharing their posts on social media can do wonders.

Beyond shopping, advocating for policies that promote an environment conducive to small business growth is crucial. As your assemblywoman, I am committed to championing legislation that eases regulatory burdens, promotes entrepreneurship and provides resources for these businesses to thrive. However, individual support and patronage remain the bedrock upon which their success is built.

Supporting local small businesses can also be achieved by standing up for the workforce who make up these establishments.

Local businesses constitute 98% of New York state’s business landscape, contributing to 40% of the private-sector workforce. I supported Assembly Bill A.4733, which establishes a small business tax credit for the employment of disabled persons, aiming to integrate a group often marginalized in the job market. When the 2024 Legislative Session begins in January, I will continue to support our workforce and the small business sector our state relies on.

The essence of Small Business Saturday should be ingrained in our daily lives. It’s not merely a day marked on the calendar — it’s a mindset.

Support small businesses every day by making efforts to shop at small, local stores in your community; purchase gift cards from your favorite restaurant, bar, coffee shop or your neighborhood specialty retailer, which will inject needed investment into these businesses well past the holiday season; head to your local farmer’s market; visit or order takeout or delivery from your local bar or restaurant; and give positive reviews for your favorite products, meals or services!
