There are probably few prouder moments in a parent’s life than when they go to help their child with a challenging task, and the child defiantly responds, “I’ll do it myself!”

Of course as the parent you’ll be there to provide guidance and assistance. But often the best way for children to become self-sufficient is for them to identify a problem, come up with a solution and do the work themselves.

That’s true of the relationship between parents and children. And it’s true of the relationship between state and local governments.
