China-North Korea Summit: Will Pyongyang’s Nuclear Development Be Overlooked?

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited North Korea for the first time in seven years and held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who is also general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea. It appears Xi sought to once again demonstrate his influence over North Korea.

However, it would be problematic if Xi prioritized improving relations with North Korea and shelved the critical issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. North Korea’s nuclear program has become a threat not only to Japan but to the entire world. China’s stance is completely irresponsible.

During the talks, the two leaders agreed on a policy to expand trade and strengthen cooperation militarily as well as in the field of science and technology.
