Rep. Al Green escorted out of chamber as Trump begins State of the Union
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was escorted out of the House chamber on Tuesday shortly after President Trump began delivering his State of the Union address.
Green held up a sign that read, “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES” as Trump entered.
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) went up to talk to Green about the sign. Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) tried to pull the sign away from him, but Green pulled it back.
The Texas Democrat ultimately ended up being led out of the chamber by security as Republicans cheered. Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) held back Nehls from Green as he was escorted out.
Green told The Hill after leaving the chamber that the sign refered to a since-deleted clip Trump had posted depicting former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.
“The President has depicted Black people, two prominent black people, the President and the First Lady, as apes. That cannot go unnoticed. For too long now, we have allowed all of his dastardly deeds to go unnoticed because he’ll get engaged with another dastardly deed. I refuse to let this go unnoticed,” he said.
“It’s an insult, not only to the President and the First Lady, but to me as a Black person… and I wanted him to know that somebody has the courage to tell him to his face, and that’s what I did,” he added.
Green said that it “did not surprise” him that he would be escorted out of the chamber.
“But, you know, on some issues, it’s better to stand alone than not stand at all,” he said.
During Trump’s speech to Congress last March, Green stood up to assert that the president had no mandate, raising his walking cane in Trump’s direction. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) ended up ordering the sergeant-at-arms to “restore order” by removing Green from the chamber.
The House later censured the Texas Democrat in a largely party-line vote.
