Massie calls for Gonzales to resign: ‘Where are the other men in the GOP?’
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) joined several of his House Republican colleagues in calling for Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) to resign over allegations that Gonzales had an affair with one of his congressional staffers, who died after setting herself on fire.
“I’m joining Nancy Mace, Lauren Boebert, and Anna Paulina Luna in calling for Representative Tony Gonzales to resign immediately. Where are the other men in the GOP? Trump is infamous for making terrible endorsements — this is one and it should be revoked,” Massie wrote on the social platform X Tuesday.
Gonzales has been under increasing scrutiny since last week, when the San Antonio Express-News reported that the now-deceased aide, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, wrote to another staffer in April 2025: “I had an affair with our boss and I’m fine.”
That pressure increased when text messages were made public Monday, and reported by the San Antonio Express-News and other outlets, that appeared to show Gonzales pressuring Santos-Aviles for explicit pictures.
Reps. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) both quickly called on Gonzales to resign on Monday.
“Tony Gonzales should resign immediately and be held fully accountable for what he’s done. She and her family deserved better. And Texans deserve a congressman who does not prey on women,” Mace wrote in a statement.
Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) and Brandon Gill (R-Texas) have said Gonzales, who is running for reelection, should drop out of the race. The Office of Congressional Conduct had wrapped up an investigation into the matter, according to NBC News, and will transmit an investigation to the House Ethics Committee after the Texas primary ends on March 3.
Luna wrote in a lengthy statement Monday night that there is a “serious problem up here, largely surrounding sexual misconduct. It pisses me off because while some of us are actually working and busting our asses, these clowns are sexually harassing their own staff, doing illegal crap, insider trading etc. It sets a terrible precedent for the entire institution.”
“Stop being predatory freaks and get OUT of office. YOU DO NOT BELONG HERE. This behavior is reprehensible and a poor reflection on the Republican Party, and I will not tolerate this type of moral rot in my own party. NOR should the AMERICAN PEOPLE,” she wrote on X.
Gonzales has previously argued that the allegations are “personal smears” being used by his primary opponent to “score political points,” and said last week he will not be “blackmailed” as the husband of the deceased staffer seeks financial damages.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) told The Hill that he thinks Gonzales should end his reelection campaign in light of the allegations.
“For the good of the country, good of the party and to move forward, he should just step out of the race,” Roy said.
Other Republicans have called for the investigation into Gonzales to play out first.
“The fact (that) this young lady killed herself is heartbreaking, and I just – just the thought of it’s horrifying. But you know, he denies it, and that’s where we have a process. So let’s let the House investigate it. I think they already got some work done on it. Let’s validate that those are his text messages and go from there,” Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) told The Hill on Tuesday.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday told reporters he had spoken with Gonzales and told him to “address that in an appropriate way with his constituents and all of that.”
“It’s too early for anybody to prejudge any of that, but we’ll see how it develops,” Johnson said.
