A trio of Senate Democrats is warning the Trump administration against interference ahead of Brazil’s presidential elections, according to a letter obtained exclusively by The Hill.
Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.) in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday warned against U.S. meddling in the elections on Oct. 4.
“Will the Administration commit to recognizing the certified outcome of Brazil’s 2026 democratic elections and to supporting normal diplomatic relations with whichever candidate is freely and fairly chosen by the Brazilian people?” the senators asked, requesting that Rubio respond.
President Trump has relished the victories of his preferred right-wing candidates across Latin America but has so far held back an explicit endorsement in Brazil’s contest.
