Talk about a turnaround, wow.
A high school wrestler is fresh off winning a national championship and is about to make the transition to college, doing so on a scholarship. However, this is a completely different story compared to the beginning of his life that actually took place outside of the United States, and it featured a jaw-dropping attack that changed his life forever.
Meet 18-year-old Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez, who’s been having to battle in life since the young age of 6 years old, but my man didn’t let any of it hold him back.
“I don’t think I would have ever thought I’d be here, coming from my country and ending up being a good wrestler,” said Sibomana-Rodriguez, per ABC7 New York. (RELATED: Could We Be Witnessing The Beginning Of The End For LIV Golf?)
When he was a young boy back home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sibomana-Rodriguez and the people he was with were attacked by several chimpanzees, which killed his cousin and injured his brother. On top of that, it left him with a life full of struggles while he was attempting to fit in. But luckily for him, he discovered wrestling, ultimately being taken in by a Long Island-based wrestling coach, who adopted him while he was in middle school.
When Sibomana-Rodriguez got to the United States, he had over a dozen reconstructive surgeries. In the chimp attack, he lost part of his face, part of his ear and an entire finger. But he didn’t let it break him.
Instead, he went from the attack and never wrestling ever in his life, to winning five Nassau County championships, three New York state titles and a national championship. And not only that, but he also earned himself a scholarship to wrestle at the University of North Carolina.
When he was six, Dunia Sibomana narrowly survived a violent chimpanzee attack in his native Congo. His injuries left him in need of facial reconstructive surgery. Fast forward to today and he’s a New York state high school wrestling champion 👏 pic.twitter.com/kb7150lS39 — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) March 20, 2023
